Solutions are homogeneous mixtures of solute and solvent from "summary" of NCERT Chemistry Class 11 - [CBSE Board] by Dr. S. C. Rastogi, ,Er. Meera Goyal

A solution is a type of mixture that is made up of two main components: solute and solvent. The solute is the substance that is being dissolved, while the solvent is the substance that does the dissolving. When these two components are combined, they form a homogeneous mixture, meaning that the solute is evenly distributed throughout the solvent. In a solution, the solute particles are dispersed and spread out in the solvent, resulting in a uniform appearance and composition. This uniform distribution is what gives solutions their distinct properties, such as transparency and stability. Because the solute particles are so finely dispersed, they are not visible to the naked eye, making solutions appear to be a single phase. The process of dissolving involves the solute particles being surrounded and separated by the solvent particles. This interaction between the solute and solvent particles is what allows the solute to dissolve and become a part of the solvent. As a result, solutions are considered to be a single phase, as opposed to heterogeneous mixtures, which consist of visibly distinct components. The composition of a solution can vary, depending on the amount of solute and solvent present. Solutions can be classified as dilute or concentrated, based on the ratio of solute to solvent. Dilute solutions have a relatively low concentration of solute, while concentrated solutions have a higher concentration of solute.
  1. Solutions are essential in various fields, including chemistry, biology, and everyday life. Understanding the concept of solutions being homogeneous mixtures of solute and solvent is crucial for comprehending many chemical processes and reactions. By grasping the fundamental principles of solutions, one can better appreciate the role they play in a wide range of applications and industries.
