Polymers are large molecules made up of repeating units from "summary" of NCERT Chemistry Class 11 - [CBSE Board] by Dr. S. C. Rastogi, ,Er. Meera Goyal

Polymers are composed of large molecules, which are made up of repeating units called monomers. These monomers are bonded together in a chain-like fashion, forming a polymer. The process of joining monomers to form a polymer is known as polymerization. The repeating units in a polymer can be identical or different, depending on the type of polymer. For example, in polyethylene, the repeating unit is ethylene, while in polyvinyl chloride, the repeating unit is vinyl chloride. The structure of the monomer determines the properties of the polymer. Polymers can be classified into two main types: addition polymers and condensation polymers. Addition polymers are formed by the repeated addition of monomers without the elimination of any byproducts. On the other hand, condensation polymers are formed by the elimination of small molecules, such as water, during the polymerization process. Polymers have a wide range of applications due to their unique properties, such as flexibility, strength, and durability. They are used in various industries, including packaging, automotive, construction, and healthcare. Some common examples of polymers include plastics, rubber, and fibers.
