Disease and immunity from "summary" of Biology by Neil A. Campbell
Disease and immunity are inextricably linked in the ongoing battle between pathogens and the immune system. Disease is the result of an infection caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. These pathogens can enter the body through various means, triggering an immune response in an attempt to eliminate the invaders. The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body against harmful pathogens. The immune response is initiated when the body recognizes the presence of foreign invaders and mounts a defense to neutralize them. This response is orchestrated by specialized white blood cells called lymphocytes, which produce antibodies that bind to and mark pathogens for destruction. In some cases, the immune response is not sufficient to eliminate the pathogen, resulting in the development of a disease. Symptoms of disease can range from mild to severe, depending on the virulence of the pathogen and the effectiveness of...Similar Posts
