Confidence comes from competence, not positive thinking from "summary" of Models by Mark Manson
Confidence is often mistaken for positivity or self-affirmation. We tend to believe that if we just think positively enough, confidence will follow suit. However, this is a flawed approach that only leads to superficial confidence at best. True confidence stems from competence - from actually being good at something. When we have real skills and abilities, we naturally feel more confident in ourselves and our capabilities. This is because our confidence is rooted in something tangible, not just wishful thinking. Competence breeds confidence because it is based on objective reality. When we know we are skilled in a particular area, we have evidence to support our confidence. This evidence gives us a solid foundation to stand on, rather than relying on vague notions of positivity. Positive thinking may help us feel better temporarily, but it doesn't build the kind of lasting confidence that competence does. Building competence takes time and effort. It requires us to put in the work to develop our skills and knowledge in a specific area. This process is not always easy or glamorous, but it is essential for true confidence to emerge. By dedicating ourselves to mastering a craft or honing a talent, we build a sense of self-assurance that is grounded in reality. In contrast, positive thinking can be fleeting and unreliable. It is based on subjective beliefs and emotions, which can fluctuate depending on external circumstances. True confidence, on the other hand, remains steadfast even in the face of challenges or setbacks. When we have genuine competence, we can weather any storm with grace and resilience.- Confidence that comes from competence is far more authentic and sustainable than confidence based on positive thinking alone. By focusing on developing our skills and abilities, we can cultivate a deep sense of self-assurance that is unshakable. This kind of confidence is not easily shaken by external factors because it is built on a solid foundation of real accomplishments and capabilities. So, instead of relying on positive thinking to boost your confidence, focus on becoming truly competent in the areas that matter to you.
