When we praise effort instead of intelligence, we are sending a powerful message to ourselves and others. Effort is something we can control and improve, while intelligence is seen as a fixed trait that we either have or we don't. By praising effort, we encourage a growth mindset that values learning and progress over a fixed mindset that focuses on proving our intelligence. When we praise intelligence, we inadvertently set ourselves up for failure. We become afraid to take risks or make mistakes, as we are afraid of not living up to the high expectations that come with being labeled as intelligent.
