Cognitive biases affect our perceptions from "summary" of Mind Over Mind by Chris Berdik

Cognitive biases shape our perceptions in ways that are often invisible to us. These biases are the result of mental shortcuts and patterns that our brains have developed over time. Instead of taking in all the information available to us, our brains filter and distort this information based on our past experiences and beliefs. This can lead to errors in judgment and decision-making, as we may not be seeing the full picture. One common cognitive bias is confirmation bias, where we seek out information that confirms our existing beliefs and ignore information that contradicts them. This can create an echo chamber effect, where our perceptions are reinforced by like-minded individuals and sources. As a result, we may become more entrenched in our beliefs and less open to considering alternative viewpoints. Another cognitive bias is the availability heuristic, where we rely on information that is readily available to us when making decisions. This can lead us to overestimate the likelihood of certain events based on how easily we can recall examples of them happening. For example, if we hear about a plane crash in the news, we may become irrationally fearful of flying even though the odds of being in a plane crash are extremely low. Our perceptions are also influenced by the anchoring effect, where we rely too heavily on the first piece of information we receive when making decisions. This initial anchor can skew our judgment, as we may adjust subsequent information based on this initial reference point. This can lead to errors in estimating value or likelihood, as we may be anchored to an arbitrary starting point.
  1. Cognitive biases can significantly impact how we perceive the world around us. By understanding these biases and being mindful of how they shape our perceptions, we can make more informed decisions and see the world with greater clarity.
