Inclusivity fosters a sense of belonging from "summary" of Marathon Woman by Kathrine Switzer

When women first started running marathons, there was a prevailing belief that they were not capable of completing such a grueling race. The men who organized these events saw women as delicate creatures who should not subject themselves to such strenuous physical activity. However, as more women began to participate in marathons, barriers began to break down, and inclusivity started to take root. As women like myself entered the male-dominated world of distance running, we faced resistance and discrimination. But we also found support and camaraderie among fellow female runners who shared our passion for the sport. This sense of belonging was crucial in helping us overcome the challenges we faced. When you feel like you belong to a community, you are more likely to push through obstacles and achieve your goals. Inclusivity is not just about letting people in; it's about creating an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. When women were excluded from marathons, it sent a message that their participation was not welcome. But when they were given the opportunity to compete alongside men, it showed that their contribution was just as important. This simple act of inclusion can have a profound impact on an individual's sense of belonging. Belonging is a basic human need that drives us to seek connection and acceptance. When we are part of a community that accepts us for who we are, we are more likely to thrive and succeed. In the world of distance running, inclusivity has allowed women to break barriers and achieve feats that were once thought impossible. By fostering a sense of belonging among all participants, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone involved.
