Balancing study time between subjects increases learning from "summary" of Make It Stick by Peter C. Brown,Henry L. Roediger III,Mark A. McDaniel

Balancing study time between subjects increases learning. This might seem counterintuitive to some students who prefer to focus on one subject at a time, but research shows that interleaving subjects during study sessions actually enhances long-term retention. When students alternate between different subjects rather than cramming dedicated blocks of time for each subject, they are forced to retrieve information from memory more frequently. This process of retrieval strengthens their ability to recall information when needed later on. Interleaving subjects also helps students distinguish between different concepts and prevents them from getting stuck in a rut of rote memorization. By switching between subjects, students are required to actively engage with the material, making connections and comparisons between different topics. This active learning approach encourages deeper understanding and critical thinking skills, ultimately leading to better academic performance. Furthermore, interleaving subjects prevents the "illusion of mastery" that can occur when students focus on one subject for an extended period of time. When students repeatedly study the same material in succession, they may mistakenly believe they have mastered the material when, in reality, they are simply becoming more familiar with it. Interleaving subjects disrupts this false sense of mastery and forces students to continuously challenge themselves, leading to more effective learning outcomes.
  1. Balancing study time between subjects is a more efficient and effective way to learn. By mixing up study sessions and interleaving different subjects, students can enhance their ability to retain information, develop critical thinking skills, and avoid falling into the trap of rote memorization. This approach not only increases learning but also promotes a deeper understanding of the material, ultimately leading to long-term academic success.
