Lies can snowball out of control from "summary" of Lying by Sam Harris

The idea that lies can snowball out of control is a familiar one. We have all experienced the feeling of being caught in a web of deceit that seems to grow more tangled with each passing moment. It is like trying to hold back an avalanche with a broom. When we tell a lie, we often do so in the hope that it will spare us some discomfort or embarrassment. But what we fail to realize is that lying is like planting a seed that will grow into a tangled thicket of falsehoods. Once we have told one lie, we are compelled to tell more to cover it up. This can quickly spiral out of control, leaving us trapped in a web of our own making. The more lies we tell, the harder it becomes to keep track of them all. We find ourselves having to create elaborate stories to explain inconsistencies and contradictions. Our lives become a maze of half-truths and fabrications, with no clear way out. In the end, the truth always has a way of coming to light. Lies have a habit of unraveling at the most inconvenient moments, exposing us to even greater embarrassment and shame. The snowball effect of lying can lead to a loss of trust, damaged relationships, and a tarnished reputation. It is a sobering reminder of the importance of honesty in our lives. The simple act of telling the truth, however uncomfortable it may be, can save us from the tangled web of deceit that lies can weave. In a world full of falsehoods, honesty is a rare and precious commodity.
