Stepping down as president from "summary" of Long Walk to Freedom with Connections by Nelson Mandela
In 1999, after serving as president for five years, I made the decision to not seek a second term. This decision was not easy, as I had spent most of my life fighting for freedom and equality. However, I believed that it was important to show the world that South Africa was a true democracy, where leaders did not cling to power but instead willingly stepped down when their time was up. Stepping down as president was a symbolic gesture of my commitment to democracy and the rule of law. It was a way of demonstrating that no one person was above the constitution, and that power should be transferred peacefully and in accordance with the will of the people.
