Leadership through courage and humility from "summary" of Long Walk To Freedom by Nelson Mandela
Courage and humility were two qualities that I strove to embody as a leader. The former was necessary to stand up to the injustices of the apartheid regime, to face the brutality of imprisonment, and to keep fighting for what I believed in. Without courage, I would never have been able to endure the hardships that I faced or to inspire others to join me in the struggle for freedom. Humility, on the other hand, was essential to my ability to connect with people from all walks of life, to listen to their concerns and perspectives, and to work together towards a common goal. I understood that leadership was not about exerting power over others, but about serving them and empowering them to become agents of change in their own right. Courage and humility may seem like contradictory qualities, but I believe that they are in fact complementary.
