In conversations with team members, leaders have the opportunity to either build trust and empower them or erode trust and diminish their sense of empowerment. One powerful way to achieve the former is through active listening. When leaders engage in active listening, they signal to their team members that they value what they have to say and that their opinions matter. This, in turn, fosters a sense of trust between the leader and the team member because the team member feels heard and understood. Active listening involves more than just hearing what someone is saying; it requires fully engaging with the speaker, both verbally and non-verbally.
