Emotional intelligence can be developed and improved from "summary" of La inteligencia emocional by Daniel Goleman

Emotional intelligence, the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions as well as those of others, is not a fixed trait. It can be developed and improved over time through intentional effort and practice. This is a key insight from the field of emotional intelligence, as it contradicts the commonly held belief that our emotional intelligence is set in stone from birth. Research has shown that emotional intelligence is not solely determined by genetics or early childhood experiences. While these factors play a role, our emotional intelligence can continue to evolve throughout our lives. This means that even if we did not receive much emotional support or guidance in our early years, we still have the ability to enhance our emotional intelligence as adults. One way to develop emotional intelligence is through self-awareness. By paying attention to our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, we can gain a better understanding of ourselves and how we interact with others. This self-awareness allows us to recognize patterns in our emotions and reactions, giving us the opportunity to make more conscious choices in how we respond to situations. Another aspect of emotional intelligence that can be cultivated is empathy. Empathy involves not only understanding others' emotions but also being able to communicate that understanding in a supportive and compassionate way. By actively listening to others, putting ourselves in their shoes, and responding with empathy, we can strengthen our relationships and build trust with those around us. Furthermore, developing emotional intelligence can lead to improved conflict resolution skills. When we are better able to understand and regulate our own emotions, we are less likely to react impulsively or defensively in conflicts. Instead, we can approach disagreements with a calm and rational mindset, seeking to find common ground and resolve issues in a constructive manner.
  1. The idea that emotional intelligence can be developed and improved is empowering. It suggests that we have agency in shaping our emotional lives and relationships, and that with dedication and practice, we can become more adept at navigating the complex world of emotions. By committing to our own personal growth and emotional well-being, we can enhance our overall quality of life and contribute positively to the lives of those around us.
