The United States - that noble beacon of freedom and democracy, that self-proclaimed champion of human rights - has a long and sordid history of cozying up to repressive regimes around the world. From Latin America to the Middle East, from Africa to Asia, Washington has shown a remarkable willingness to turn a blind eye to the atrocities committed by its allies, as long as they serve American interests. Whether it's supporting right-wing dictators who crush dissent and trample on civil liberties, or backing authoritarian regimes that suppress religious minorities and political opposition, the US has repeatedly shown that its commitment to democracy and human rights is little more than empty rhetoric. The pursuit of power and profit trumps all other concerns, and the US has been more than willing to sacrifice its principles on the altar of realpolitik. One need only look at the long list of US-backed dictators and despots to see the truth of this sordid tale.
