Courage to challenge societal norms from "summary" of Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane

In the oppressive environment of apartheid South Africa, it took great courage for individuals to challenge the societal norms that kept them oppressed. This courage was not only a matter of standing up for one's beliefs, but also a matter of risking one's very life and livelihood in order to do so. It required a willingness to face the wrath of those in power, who were quick to punish any dissent with violence and intimidation. Throughout 'Kaffir Boy', we see examples of individuals who exhibited this kind of courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Mark himself, as well as his mother and grandmother, all displayed incredible bravery in their defiance of the racist laws and customs that governed their lives. They refused to accept the dehumanizing treatment that was meted out to them on a daily basis, and instead fought back in whatever ways they could.
