Teachers facilitate the process from "summary" of Inquiry-Based Learning by Teresa Coffman

The role of the teacher in an inquiry-based learning environment is not to be the primary source of information or the dispenser of knowledge. Instead, the teacher's main function is to guide and support students as they navigate the process of inquiry. This means that teachers must be knowledgeable about the subject matter and skilled in facilitating learning experiences that encourage students to ask questions, seek answers, and make connections. Teachers facilitate the process by creating a safe and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and exploring new ideas. They encourage curiosity and critical thinking by posing open-ended questions, challenging assumptions, and providing opportunities for students to engage in meaningful discussions with their peers. Inquiry-based learning requires teachers to be flexible and adaptive, responding to the needs and interests of their students as they arise. This may involve adjusting lesson plans on the fly, providing additional resources or support to students who are struggling, or encouraging students to pursue their own lines of inquiry outside of the classroom. Teachers also play a crucial role in helping students develop the skills they need to be successful in an inquiry-based learning environment. This includes teaching students how to ask good questions, how to conduct research, how to evaluate sources of information, and how to communicate their findings effectively.
  1. The goal of inquiry-based learning is to empower students to become independent, self-directed learners who are capable of solving complex problems and making informed decisions. By facilitating the process of inquiry, teachers help students develop the skills, knowledge, and dispositions they need to succeed in school and beyond.
