The Lok Sabha is the lower house of Parliament in India. It is also known as the House of the People. The Lok Sabha is composed of representatives of the people chosen by direct election on the basis of universal adult suffrage. The maximum strength of the Lok Sabha is fixed at 552 members. Of these, not more than 530 members represent the states, while up to 20 members represent the Union Territories. In addition to these, two members of the Anglo-Indian community can be nominated by the President if he feels that the community is not adequately represented in the House. The members of the Lok Sabha are elected for a term of five years, unless the House is dissolved earlier. The Lok Sabha is presided over by the Speaker, who is elected by the members of the House. The Speaker is assisted by the Deputy Speaker, who is also elected by the members. The main function of the Lok Sabha is to represent the people of India, make laws, and oversee the work of the government. The Lok Sabha has the power to pass a vote of no confidence against the government, which can lead to the government's resignation. The Lok Sabha plays a crucial role in the functioning of Indian democracy. It is the voice of the people and acts as a check on the government.
