Empathy is at the heart of inclusion. It is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Cultivating empathy means actively working to develop and strengthen this capacity within ourselves. It requires us to step outside of our own experiences and perspectives, and truly listen and connect with those around us. To cultivate empathy, we must first recognize our own biases and assumptions. We all have them, whether we are aware of them or not. By acknowledging these biases, we can begin to challenge and reshape them. This self-awareness is the first step towards building a more inclusive mindset. Empathy also involves active listening. This means giving our full attention to the speaker, without interrupting or judging. It means asking open-ended questions to encourage deeper conversation and understanding.
