Resistance to change is often rooted in fear from "summary" of Immunity to Change by Robert Kegan,Lisa Laskow Lahey
Resistance to change can often feel like an immovable force, holding us back from growth and progress. It can be frustrating, confusing, and even infuriating at times. We may find ourselves wondering why we can't seem to make the changes we know we need to make. The truth is, resistance to change is a complex and deeply ingrained phenomenon that is not easily overcome. One of the key insights from our work is that resistance to change is often rooted in fear. This fear may be conscious or unconscious, rational or irrational, but it is always present in some form. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of rejection – these are just a few of the many fears that can hold us back from embracing change. When we resist change, we are essentially trying to protect ourselves from perceived threats. Our minds are wired to seek safety and security, and any deviation from the familiar can trigger a primal response that tells us to stay put. This is why change can feel so uncomfortable and even dangerous at times – our brains are literally trying to keep us safe. In order to overcome resistance to change, we must first acknowledge and understand the fears that underlie it. This requires a deep dive into our own inner workings, a process of self-discovery that can be both challenging and rewarding. By shining a light on our fears, we can begin to see them for what they really are – not insurmountable obstacles, but manageable challenges that can be overcome with the right mindset and support. It is important to remember that fear is a natural and normal part of the human experience. It is not something to be ashamed of or to run away from, but something to be embraced and explored. By confronting our fears head-on, we can begin to unravel the tangled web of resistance that holds us back and move forward with confidence and courage.Similar Posts
