Immunity to change is a selfprotective mechanism from "summary" of Immunity to Change by Robert Kegan,Lisa Laskow Lahey

When we encounter a situation that challenges our existing beliefs or habits, our natural response is often to resist change. This resistance is not just a matter of stubbornness or close-mindedness, but rather a deeply ingrained self-protective mechanism. Our minds have developed over time to prioritize stability and predictability, as these qualities have historically been essential for our survival. When we are faced with the possibility of change, our minds perceive it as a potential threat to our well-being. As a result, we instinctively put up barriers to protect ourselves from the perceived danger. These barriers take the form of unconscious beliefs, assumptions, and behaviors that serve to maintain the status quo and prevent us from venturing into unknown territory. This self-protective mechanism is so powerful that it can override our conscious efforts to change. Even when we sincerely want to change a certain aspect of ourselves, our underlying immunity to change can thwart our best intentions. This is why simply setting goals or making resolutions is often not enough to bring about lasting change. In order to truly overcome our immunity to change, we must first become aware of the deep-seated beliefs and assumptions that are holding us back. We must shine a light on the hidden barriers that are preventing us from moving forward. By acknowledging and understanding these barriers, we can begin to dismantle them and create a path for genuine transformation. It is only by confronting our immunity to change head-on that we can break free from its grasp and embrace new possibilities. This process requires courage, self-reflection, and a willingness to challenge our own assumptions. But the rewards of overcoming our immunity to change are immense – greater self-awareness, personal growth, and the ability to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing world.
