Comparing oneself to others can diminish happiness from "summary" of If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Happy? by Raj Raghunathan

When we compare ourselves to others, we are engaging in what psychologists call "social comparison." This can take many forms, such as comparing our possessions, achievements, or relationships to those of others. The problem with social comparison is that it often leads to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction. One reason for this is that when we compare ourselves to others, we tend to focus on those who are doing better than us. This can create a sense of envy or jealousy, as we feel that we are somehow lacking compared to them. This can make us feel unhappy with our own lives, as we constantly measure ourselves against an unattainable standard set by others. Another reason why comparing ourselves to others can diminish happiness is that it can lead to a sense of competition and rivalry. When we see others as competitors rather than collaborators, we are more likely to feel threatened by their success. This can create a negative cycle of comparison, as we constantly try to outdo others rather than focusing on our own goals and values. Furthermore, social comparison can also lead to a distorted perception of reality. We often compare ourselves to others based on superficial qualities or achievements, without taking into account the full context of their lives. This can create a skewed view of our own worth and capabilities, as we fail to see the bigger picture beyond what others choose to show.
  1. Comparing oneself to others can diminish happiness by fostering feelings of inadequacy, competition, and envy. Instead of focusing on external comparisons, it is important to cultivate self-awareness and self-compassion. By understanding our own values and strengths, we can find true fulfillment and contentment without relying on the unrealistic standards set by others.
