Fertilization leads to the formation of a zygote from "summary" of Human Biology by Cecie Starr,Beverly McMillan
The process of fertilization is a crucial step in sexual reproduction. It occurs when a sperm cell from a male fuses with an egg cell from a female. This fusion results in the formation of a zygote, which is the first cell of a new individual. During fertilization, the sperm cell penetrates the protective layers surrounding the egg cell and enters its cytoplasm. This triggers a series of changes in the egg, including the release of enzymes that prevent other sperm cells from entering. Once the sperm cell has entered the egg cell, their genetic material combines to form a single cell with a complete set of chromosomes. This new cell, known as a zygote, contains all the genetic information necessary for the development of a new individual. The zygote then undergoes a process called cleavage, where it divides multiple times to form a solid ball of cells called a morula. The morula eventually develops into a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst, which implants itself in the wall of the uterus. After implantation, the blastocyst continues to grow and develop, eventually forming the structures necessary for the embryo to survive and grow. This process of fertilization and early development is essential for the continuation of the species.- Fertilization is the process by which a sperm cell fuses with an egg cell to form a zygote. This zygote then goes through a series of developmental stages to eventually give rise to a new individual.
