Energy is essential for life processes from "summary" of Human Biology by Cecie Starr,Beverly McMillan
Energy is indispensable for the survival of all living organisms. Without energy, life processes would come to a standstill. Energy is required for growth, repair, movement, reproduction, and countless other functions that keep living organisms alive and functioning. In the absence of energy, cells would not be able to carry out essential processes such as metabolism, respiration, and synthesis of biomolecules. In the world of biology, energy is defined as the capacity to do work or bring about a change. This work may involve movement, transportation of substances, or the synthesis of complex molecules. Living organisms obtain energy from their surroundings in various forms such as sunlight, food, or chemical compounds. The energy obtained is then converted into a usable form, typically in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which serves as the energy currency of the cell. The process by which energy is obtained and converted into a usable form is known as metabolism. Metabolism encompasses a series of chemical reactions that occur within cells to break down nutrients and release energy for various cellular processes. Energy is also required for the synthesis of new molecules, growth, and repair of tissues. In multicellular organisms, energy is needed not only at the cellular level but also at the organismal level for functions such as movement, circulation, and maintenance of body temperature. For example, muscles require energy to contract and generate movement, while the heart needs energy to pump blood throughout the body. Without energy, these vital functions would cease, leading to the demise of the organism.- Energy is the driving force behind all life processes. It is essential for the survival, growth, and functioning of living organisms. Without energy, life as we know it would not exist. Therefore, understanding the role of energy in biological systems is crucial for comprehending the complexity of life.
