Water will be crucial on Mars from "summary" of How We'll Live on Mars by Stephen Petranek

Mars is a harsh and unforgiving planet, with an atmosphere that is 96 percent carbon dioxide and temperatures that can plummet to minus 195 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the most crucial elements necessary for human survival, water, is incredibly scarce on Mars. Without water, humans cannot survive for long. Therefore, it is imperative that we find a way to access and utilize water on the Red Planet. There are a few potential sources of water on Mars that we can tap into. One possibility is the ice caps that sit on the poles of Mars. These ice caps are made up of a combination of water and carbon dioxide, which could potentially be melted and purified for human consumption. Another potential source of water is underground aquifers, which may exist beneath the surface of Mars. By drilling deep into the Martian soil, we may be able to access these underground reservoirs of water. In addition to using existing sources of water on Mars, we may also need to come up with innovative ways to create water. One possibility is to use a process called electrolysis to split the water molecules in the Martian soil into hydrogen and oxygen. This not only provides us with water to drink, but also with oxygen to breathe. Another option is to extract water from the atmosphere by condensing the moisture in the air. This approach may prove to be more challenging, but it is certainly worth exploring. Furthermore, once we have access to water on Mars, we will need to be mindful of how we use it. Water will be a precious resource on the Red Planet, and we cannot afford to waste it. We must develop efficient water recycling systems to ensure that every drop is used to its fullest potential. This will require careful planning and the implementation of advanced technologies to monitor and manage our water supply.
  1. The availability of water will be a crucial factor in determining the success of human colonization on Mars. Without water, we cannot hope to survive on the Red Planet. Therefore, it is essential that we find ways to access, create, and conserve water on Mars. By prioritizing the development of water-related technologies and systems, we can ensure the long-term sustainability of human life on Mars.
