Recognizing internalized racism from "summary" of How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi

Recognizing internalized racism involves acknowledging the ways in which we have absorbed racist ideas and beliefs about ourselves and others. It requires us to examine our own thoughts and actions to identify any biases that we may hold, even if we are not consciously aware of them. Internalized racism can manifest in the form of self-hatred, low self-esteem, or a belief in the inherent superiority of one race over others. One way to recognize internalized racism is to pay attention to our reactions and responses to different races or ethnicities. Do we make assumptions about people based on their race? Do we treat individuals differently because of their skin color? By reflecting on our behaviors and attitudes, we can begin to uncover any underlying prejudices that we may have internalized. It is also important to consider the messages that we have been exposed to throughout our lives. Society bombards us with images and stereotypes that perpetuate racist ideas, whether through media, education, or everyday interactions. These messages can shape our beliefs about ourselves and others, leading us to internalize harmful notions about race. To combat internalized racism, we must actively challenge and unlearn these ingrained biases. This involves interrogating our own beliefs and assumptions, as well as seeking out opportunities to educate ourselves about different cultures and perspectives. By engaging in conversations about race and racism, we can begin to dismantle the harmful ideas that we have internalized and work towards becoming antiracist individuals. Recognizing internalized racism is a crucial step in the journey towards becoming antiracist. It requires self-reflection, humility, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths about ourselves. By acknowledging and addressing our own biases, we can work towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.
