Growing up in a small town in rural Mississippi meant that our childhoods were shaped by poverty, racism, and violence. The landscape around us was dotted with dilapidated houses and overgrown fields, a stark contrast to the lush imagery of the South that is often romanticized in literature and film. We didn't have much in the way of material possessions, but we made do with what we had, finding joy in simple pleasures like playing in the dirt, chasing after fireflies, and running through the fields until our legs ached.
