Let go of the past and the future, and focus on the present moment from "summary" of How to Be a Stoic by Massimo Pigliucci

The Stoics urge us to let go of the past and the future, and instead focus on the present moment. This may seem like a simple concept, but it has profound implications for our well-being. By letting go of the past, we free ourselves from the burden of regret and resentment. We cannot change what has already happened, so dwelling on it only serves to cause us unnecessary suffering. Similarly, by letting go of the future, we free ourselves from the anxiety and worry that often accompany thoughts of what may or may not happen. The future is uncertain, and so much of what we worry about never comes to pass. By focusing on the present moment, we can find peace and contentment in the here and now. This does not mean that we should ignore the past or the future entirely. It is important to learn from our past mistakes and plan for the future. However, we should not allow ourselves to be consumed by thoughts of what has already happened or what may happen in the future. Instead, we should cultivate mindfulness and presence in the current moment. Practicing mindfulness allows us to fully experience and appreciate the present moment. It helps us to be more aware of our thoughts and emotions, and to respond to them in a calm and rational manner. By being fully present in the moment, we can find joy and contentment in even the simplest of activities. In this way, the Stoic philosophy encourages us to live in accordance with nature, embracing the present moment as it is, without clinging to the past or anxiously anticipating the future. By letting go of what is outside of our control and focusing on what is within our control – our thoughts, emotions, and actions – we can find peace and tranquility in the midst of life's uncertainties.
