Harold rebels against his controlling mother from "summary" of Harold and Maude by Colin Higgins
Harold found himself constantly at odds with his mother, who seemed to exert control over every aspect of his life. She dictated what he wore, who he spent time with, and even what career path he should pursue. Despite her best intentions, Harold felt suffocated by her overbearing nature.
In an act of rebellion, Harold started to push back against his mother's expectations. He began to dress in ways that went against her conservative tastes, choosing outlandish outfits that caused her much distress. He also started spending time with people who were deemed unsuitable by his mother, relishing in the shock and disapproval he knew it would bring.
As Harold continued to rebel, his actions became more extreme. He purposefully sought out experiences that he knew would upset his mother, relishing in the freedom he felt when he went against her wishes. He began to see his rebellion as a form of liberation, a way to break free from the constraints she had placed on him for so long.
Despite his mother's protests and attempts to reign him in, Harold remained steadfast in his defiance. He was determined to live life on his own terms, even if it meant causing his mother pain. In his mind, the only way to assert his independence and assert his identity was to rebel against the one person who had held so much control over him for so long.
