In Coketown, a place where facts and figures are valued above all else, the importance of family is often overlooked. Families are seen as mere units of production, with no room for sentimentality or emotion. Mr. Gradgrind, a firm believer in the Utilitarian philosophy, views his own family in the same way he views everything else - as pieces of a puzzle that must fit together perfectly to achieve maximum efficiency.
