The diverse trajectories of human societies can be traced back to the influence of environmental factors. The environments in which different societies developed played a crucial role in shaping their paths. The availability of resources, the presence of domesticable plants and animals, and the geographic features of a region all played a part in determining the progress of societies. For instance, societies that had access to a wide variety of domesticable plants and animals were able to develop agriculture and settle in one place. This sedentary lifestyle allowed for the development of complex societies with specialized labor and social hierarchies.
