Let go of attachment to possessions from "summary" of Goodbye, Things: The New Japanese Minimalism by Fumio Sasaki

One of the key principles of minimalism is the idea of detaching ourselves from our possessions. It's about recognizing that our happiness and self-worth are not tied to the things we own. This mentality allows us to let go of the constant need to accumulate more stuff, freeing us from the burden of material possessions. When we let go of attachment to our possessions, we are able to see them for what they truly are: just things. They are not extensions of ourselves or representations of our worth. By releasing this attachment, we are able to declutter our physical space and our minds, creating room for more important things in our lives. Our possessions often end up owning us, dictating our actions and decisions. We spend our time and energy acquiring, organizing, and maintaining our stuff, which takes away from the things that truly matter. When we let go of attachment to possessions, we regain control of our lives and our priorities. Detaching ourselves from possessions also allows us to live more mindfully. We become more conscious of what we bring into our lives and why. We start to question whether something adds value to our lives or if it is just contributing to the clutter. This mindfulness helps us make more intentional choices and live more purposefully.
  1. Letting go of attachment to possessions is about finding freedom. It's about breaking free from the consumerist mindset that tells us we need more to be happy. It's about realizing that true contentment comes from within, not from the things we own. When we are able to release our attachment to possessions, we open ourselves up to a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
