Main character makes difficult decisions from "summary" of Godan by Munshi Premchand

The protagonist of 'Godan', Hori, finds himself constantly faced with difficult decisions throughout the course of the story. From the very beginning, he is portrayed as a simple, honest farmer who is struggling to make ends meet. Despite his lack of material wealth, Hori is a man of integrity and principles, which often puts him at odds with those around him. One of the major decisions that Hori is forced to make is whether or not to take a loan from the village moneylender, Sukhilala, in order to buy a cow. Hori knows that taking a loan from Sukhilala will only lead to further debt and servitude, but he also knows that without a cow, his family will continue to suffer. In the end, Hori decides to take the loan, believing that it is the only way to improve his family's situation. Another difficult decision that Hori faces is whether or not to marry off his daughter, Seli, to a man of a higher caste in order to improve their social standing. Hori is torn between his love for his daughter and his desire to see her secure a better future. In the end, Hori decides to go against his daughter's wishes and arranges her marriage to the wealthy but cruel landlord's son. Throughout the story, Hori is constantly faced with moral and ethical dilemmas that force him to choose between his own values and the demands of society. Despite the hardships and challenges that he faces, Hori remains true to himself and his beliefs, even when it means making decisions that are difficult and unpopular. In 'Godan', the concept of the main character making difficult decisions is central to the narrative, highlighting the complexities of human nature and the struggles of individuals caught between tradition and modernity, duty and desire. Through Hori's journey, the reader is compelled to reflect on the nature of morality, sacrifice, and the choices that shape our lives.
