Ego states influence game playing behavior from "summary" of Games People Play by Eric Berne, MD

In the course of our daily lives, we are often unaware of the different ego states we inhabit, and how these states influence our interactions with others. These ego states are like different characters within us, each with its own set of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. When we engage in games, these ego states come into play, shaping our game playing behavior in significant ways. For example, when we find ourselves playing the game of "Why Don't You - Yes But," we may notice that our Critical Parent ego state takes over, constantly criticizing and finding fault with the suggestions put forth by others.
