Selfinterest drives decision-making from "summary" of Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt

The driving force behind most decisions is self-interest. People tend to act in ways that they believe will benefit themselves the most. This concept can be seen in various aspects of life, from personal relationships to business dealings. For example, when someone chooses a particular job or career path, they are likely considering how it will benefit them personally, whether through salary, job satisfaction, or future opportunities. Self-interest can also play a role in more unexpected ways. Take the case of Sumo wrestlers in Japan, for instance. These athletes are ranked based on their performance in tournaments, with the top wrestlers earning significantly more money and prestige. One might assume that the wrestlers at the top of the rankings would have little incentive to cheat, as they have already achieved success. However, research revealed that even these top-ranked wrestlers were more likely to cheat by throwing matches if it meant helping a lower-ranked wrestler who had supported them in the past. In this way, self-interest can drive decision-making not just for personal gain, but also in consideration of relationships and alliances. Self-interest can also be seen in the realm of crime. Criminals, like everyone else, are often motivated by what they perceive to be in their best interest. For example, studies have shown that the likelihood of someone committing a crime can be influenced by the potential payoff and the perceived risk of getting caught. This is why certain crimes, such as drug dealing, may be more prevalent in areas where the potential profits are high and law enforcement is less strict. In the end, self-interest is a powerful force that shapes the decisions we make every day. Whether we are choosing a career, navigating personal relationships, or even considering breaking the law, our actions are often guided by what we believe will benefit us the most. It is important to recognize the role that self-interest plays in decision-making and consider how it influences our own choices and those of others.
