We are prone to seeing patterns where none exist from "summary" of Fooled by Randomness by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Our brain is wired to detect patterns, even where they may not actually exist. This tendency is deeply ingrained in our cognitive processes, leading us to find connections and causality where there is simply randomness at play. We are quick to attribute meaning to events, creating narratives that make sense of the world around us, even when there is no underlying logic or order. This propensity for pattern-seeking can have significant implications, particularly when it comes to decision-making and risk assessment. We may believe that we have identified trends or relationships in data that are purely the result of chance, leading us to make misguided predictions or investments based on faulty assumptions. This cognitive bias can cloud our judgment and distort our perception of reality, leaving us vulnerable to making errors in judgment. Moreover, our tendency to see patterns where none exist can be exacerbated by our desire for control and certainty in an uncertain world. We seek out explanations and rationalizations for events, even when they are truly random or unpredictable. This need for coherence and order can lead us astray, as we cling to false beliefs and illusions of understanding.
  1. Our minds are constantly searching for patterns and meaning in a chaotic and unpredictable world. This cognitive bias towards seeing connections and causality can lead us to make faulty assumptions and decisions, based on false patterns that we perceive. It is essential to recognize and guard against this tendency, in order to avoid being fooled by randomness and making decisions based on illusory patterns that do not actually exist.
