The environment shapes the evolutionary processes that influence our behavior from "summary" of Evolutionary Psychology by David M. Buss

Evolutionary psychology posits that our behavior is shaped by the interplay between our genetic inheritance and the environment in which we live. The environment in which we are raised influences the expression of our genetic predispositions. Our genes provide the blueprint for our behavior, but the environment can either activate or suppress certain behaviors. The environment can shape our evolutionary processes by selecting for certain traits that are advantageous in a particular context. For example, in environments where resources are scarce, individuals who are more cooperative and willing to share with others may have a better chance of survival and reproduction. Over time, this trait may become more common in the population as those who possess it are more successful at passing on their genes. Additionally, the environment can influence our behavior through social learning and cultural transmission. We learn from those around us, picking up norms, values, and behaviors that are prevalent in our social group. These learned behaviors can be adaptive in a particular environment, leading to their continuation over generations. Furthermore, the environment can also impact our behavior through gene-environment interactions. Certain genes may be more or less influential depending on the environmental context in which they are expressed. For example, a genetic predisposition for aggression may be more likely to manifest in a violent environment than in a peaceful one.
  1. The environment plays a critical role in shaping the evolutionary processes that influence our behavior. It can select for certain traits, influence social learning and cultural transmission, and interact with our genes to determine how they are expressed. By understanding the complex interplay between our genes and our environment, we can gain insight into the origins of human behavior.
