Human emotions and motivations have evolutionary roots from "summary" of Evolutionary Psychology by David M. Buss

Human emotions and motivations are not random occurrences but are deeply rooted in our evolutionary past. These emotions and motivations have been shaped by natural selection over millions of years to help our ancestors survive and reproduce in their ancestral environments. For example, fear is an emotion that likely evolved to protect our ancestors from potential threats in their environment. Those who were more sensitive to danger were more likely to survive and pass on their genes, leading to the prevalence of fear in modern humans. Similarly, our motivations such as the desire for food, sex, and social status can also be traced back to our evolutionary history. The drive to seek out high-calorie foods was adaptive for our ancestors who faced periods of food scarcity. Individuals who were more successful in obtaining food were more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on their genes for a preference for high-calorie foods to future generations. The desire for sex is another motivation that is deeply ingrained in our evolutionary past, as reproduction is essential for the survival of our species. Social status, another common motivation in humans, can also be linked to our evolutionary history. In ancestral environments, individuals who held higher social status had access to more resources and were more attractive mates. As a result, the drive for social status became ingrained in our psychological makeup as a way to increase our chances of survival and reproduction.
  1. Human emotions and motivations can be understood as adaptations that have helped us navigate and thrive in our ancestral environments. By recognizing the evolutionary roots of these emotions and motivations, we can gain a deeper understanding of why we think and behave the way we do in modern society.
