Gender biases are evident in search data from "summary" of Everybody Lies by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz

Gender biases are evident in search data. People may be more honest with their Google searches than they are with surveys or even with their friends. This honesty allows us to see what people are really thinking. And what they are really thinking is often very ugly. For example, when people are behind a computer screen, they may feel more comfortable expressing their true feelings about gender. This can reveal some uncomfortable truths about society. Women are often the target of these biases. Men are more likely to search for jokes mocking women while women are more likely to search for jokes mocking men. This shows a difference in how each gender perceives and represents the other. Men may feel threatened by women gaining power in society, leading to more negative searches about women. On the other hand, women may be searching for jokes about men as a form of retaliation or empowerment. Stereotypes also play a role in gender biases in search data. For example, people may search for certain terms when they are curious about a specific gender. This can reinforce stereotypes and perpetuate harmful biases. For instance, searches related to intelligence often include gendered terms like "smartest man" or "smartest woman." These searches reflect societal beliefs about intelligence and gender, whether accurate or not. Moreover, gender biases in search data can have real-world consequences. For instance, job searches may reveal biases in hiring practices. Employers may search for terms related to certain genders, leading to discriminatory hiring decisions. This perpetuates inequality in the workplace and limits opportunities for individuals based on their gender. These biases are not only evident in search data but also have a significant impact on society as a whole.
