She must confront prejudice and discrimination in her new environment from "summary" of Esperanza Rising (Scholastic Gold) by Pam Muñoz Ryan

As Esperanza enters her new life in California, she is faced with the harsh reality of prejudice and discrimination. Despite her privileged upbringing in Mexico, she now finds herself at the bottom of the social hierarchy.
