True freedom is found in connecting with oneself and others from "summary" of Escape from Freedom by Erich Fromm

True freedom is not simply the absence of external constraints, but rather the presence of a deep connection with oneself and others. It is the ability to act authentically, in line with one's true desires and values, while also recognizing and respecting the autonomy and humanity of others. This kind of freedom is not easy to achieve, as it requires a great deal of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and empathy. Connecting with oneself involves understanding one's own needs, emotions, and motivations, as well as accepting oneself as a flawed and imperfect human being. It requires the courage to confront one's fears, insecurities, and vulnerabilities, rather than seeking to escape or deny them. Only by facing and embracing these aspects of oneself can one truly be free to act in accordance with one's true self. At the same time, connecting with others is essential for true freedom, as human beings are inherently social creatures who rely on relationships for support, validation, and growth. By forming meaningful connections with others, we expand our sense of self and gain new perspectives and insights that can enrich our lives. This kind of connection is not about losing oneself in others or seeking validation from external sources, but rather about engaging in genuine, reciprocal relationships based on mutual respect, empathy, and understanding. In a society that values individualism and competition above all else, it can be easy to lose sight of the importance of connecting with oneself and others. We are bombarded with messages that tell us we must constantly strive to be better, achieve more, and outperform others in order to be successful and happy. This relentless pursuit of external validation and material success can lead to feelings of emptiness, alienation, and disconnection from ourselves and others. True freedom, on the other hand, is not about conforming to external expectations or seeking approval from others, but rather about cultivating a deep sense of inner peace, fulfillment, and authenticity. It is about finding the courage to be true to oneself, while also recognizing and respecting the humanity and autonomy of others. Only by connecting with oneself and others in this way can we truly experience the freedom to be who we are and live a life that is meaningful, fulfilling, and in harmony with our deepest values and desires.
