Conformity can mask feelings of insecurity from "summary" of Escape from Freedom by Erich Fromm

When one conforms to societal norms and expectations, it may seem like a way to fit in and feel secure. By following the crowd and not standing out, one can avoid the feelings of isolation and alienation that come from being different. However, this conformity is often a facade that masks deeper feelings of insecurity. In conforming to external standards, individuals may find temporary relief from their inner doubts and fears. By adhering to the rules and beliefs of the group, they can convince themselves that they are accepted and valued. This sense of belonging can provide a sense of security and stability that is comforting in a world filled with uncertainty. Yet, this conformity is not a true solution to feelings of insecurity. Instead, it is a defense mechanism that allows individuals to avoid confronting their innermost fears and anxieties. By focusing on external validation and approval, they can distract themselves from the deeper issues that plague them. In reality, conformity only serves to reinforce feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. By constantly seeking approval from others and conforming to their standards, individuals are essentially admitting that they are not good enough as they are. This perpetuates a cycle of insecurity and self-loathing that can be difficult to break free from.
  1. True security and confidence come from within. Instead of relying on external validation and conformity, individuals must learn to accept themselves for who they are. By embracing their uniqueness and facing their fears head-on, they can overcome feelings of insecurity and find true freedom and fulfillment.
