Growing up in a strict, isolated family meant that my world was confined to the walls of our home. My father believed education was a tool of the government to brainwash us, so we were not allowed to attend school. Instead, we spent our days working in the junkyard or helping our mother make herbal remedies. As a child, I had no concept of the outside world beyond our mountain. I had never heard of the Holocaust or the Civil Rights Movement. My knowledge of history was limited to what my father told us, which was often distorted or outright false.
