Trade networks connected ancient Indian civilizations from "summary" of Early Indians by Tony Joseph

Trade networks in ancient India played a crucial role in connecting different civilizations across the subcontinent. These networks were not just about exchanging goods but also facilitated the exchange of ideas, technologies, and cultural practices. The Harappan civilization, for example, had extensive trade networks that connected it to regions as far as Mesopotamia. The discovery of Harappan seals in Mesopotamia and Mesopotamian seals in Harappa is evidence of this long-distance trade. This exchange of goods and ideas helped in the development of urban centers and the spread of urbanization in ancient India. The Mauryan Empire, which followed the decline of the Harappan civilization, also benefited from trade networks. The Mauryan rulers, such as Chandragupta and Ashoka, established trade routes that connected India to Central Asia, West Asia, and even the Mediterranean. These trade routes not only brought wealth to the empire but also facilitated the spread of Buddhism to other parts of Asia. The Gupta Empire, another significant ancient Indian civilization, continued to expand trade networks. The Gupta rulers encouraged trade with Southeast Asia, China, and the Roman Empire. This exchange of goods and ideas led to a cultural flourishing known as the "Golden Age" of India.
