Miscommunication leads to misunderstandings from "summary" of DUBLINERS by James Joyce

In the stories of Dubliners, we see how miscommunication often arises between characters, causing them to misinterpret each other's intentions. This lack of clear communication leads to misunderstandings that can have significant consequences on their relationships and lives. In "Eveline," for example, the titular character struggles to communicate with her lover, Frank, about her desire to leave Dublin. She is torn between her duty to her family and her longing for a better life abroad. However, Eveline's inability to express her feelings to Frank ultimately leads to a misunderstanding that prevents her from escaping her unhappy existence. Similarly, in "Clay," Maria's interactions with her colleagues at the charity bazaar are marked by miscommunications and misunderstandings. Despite her efforts to fit in and be helpful, she is met with indifference and confusion. This lack of understanding between Maria and the other characters highlights the isolation and disconnect she feels in her own life. In "A Little Cloud," we see how miscommunication can also lead to resentment and disappointment. Little Chandler's dream of becoming a poet is met with ridicule and dismissal by his old friend Ignatius Gallaher. The two characters fail to understand each other's perspectives, leading to a breakdown in their relationship and a sense of disillusionment for Little Chandler.
