Loneliness pervades modern urban life from "summary" of DUBLINERS by James Joyce

In the streets of Dublin, one can sense a pervasive atmosphere of isolation and disconnection. The characters in the stories of this collection seem to drift through life, detached from those around them. Their interactions are often superficial, lacking genuine connection or empathy. In "The Sisters," we see a young boy grappling with the death of a priest who was like a mentor to him. Despite their close relationship, the boy struggles to truly understand the priest's inner thoughts and feelings. This inability to connect on a deeper level leaves the boy feeling adrift and alone in his grief. Similarly, in "A Little Cloud," we follow the story of a man named Little Chandler who dreams of literary success. However, his aspirations only serve to highlight his sense of inadequacy and alienation from those around him. He longs for the companionship and understanding of his old friend Gallaher, but their reunion only serves to underscore the growing distance between them.
