The medical community must take responsibility for overprescribing. It is a harsh reality that we must face. It is easy to blame the pharmaceutical companies for their aggressive marketing tactics. They have played a significant role in the opioid epidemic, no doubt about that. But the medical community cannot escape accountability. We, as doctors, have a duty to do no harm. Yet, we have been complicit in the overprescribing of opioids. It is not something we can ignore or brush aside. We must acknowledge our role in this crisis. We have been too quick to reach for the prescription pad. It has become a reflex, a habit. We see a patient in pain, and we want to help.
