Surveillance and observation regulate behavior from "summary" of Discipline and Punish by Michel Foucault

The mechanisms of surveillance and observation play a crucial role in the regulation of behavior within disciplinary societies. Through constant monitoring and scrutiny, individuals are compelled to conform to societal norms and expectations. This form of control operates on a subtle yet pervasive level, shaping and molding behavior through the fear of being watched. Surveillance creates a sense of being constantly under scrutiny, leading individuals to internalize the norms and values of society. The panopticon, a central metaphor in understanding this disciplinary power, represents the all-seeing eye that enforces discipline through the mere possibility of observation. This internalization of surveillance mechanisms leads to self-regulation, as individuals begin to police their own behavior in anticipation of being watched. Observation, on the other hand, functions as a tool for social control by making individuals aware of their visibility to others. The gaze of authority figures, whether real or imagined, exerts a disciplinary power that regulates behavior through the fear of judgment and punishment. This awareness of being observed creates a sense of self-consciousness that influences how individuals present themselves to the world. The regulation of behavior through surveillance and observation is not limited to specific institutions or spaces but permeates all aspects of society. From the workplace to the school to the home, individuals are subjected to various forms of monitoring that shape their actions and decisions. This constant surveillance creates a sense of discipline that operates both externally, through the actions of authority figures, and internally, through self-regulation. In this way, surveillance and observation become essential tools in the maintenance of social order and the enforcement of disciplinary power. By controlling behavior through mechanisms of visibility and scrutiny, disciplinary societies are able to mold individuals into compliant and docile subjects. The pervasive nature of surveillance and observation ensures that individuals are always aware of their place within the social hierarchy, leading to a continual process of self-monitoring and regulation.
