When we adopt the role of a victim in a situation, we are essentially feeding our ego. By playing the victim, we reinforce the belief that we are somehow separate from the events occurring around us, that we are not responsible for our own experiences. This is a convenient way for the ego to protect itself from taking ownership of our actions and their consequences. When we paint ourselves as the victim, we are essentially saying that we are powerless in the face of our circumstances. This allows us to avoid the discomfort of confronting our own role in creating or perpetuating the situation.
