Cognitive dissonance causes inner conflict from "summary" of Dark Psychology by Jonathan Mind

When our beliefs and actions are in conflict with each other, we experience cognitive dissonance. This state of discomfort arises from holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. For example, if a person believes stealing is wrong but steals something, cognitive dissonance occurs. This inner conflict can cause feelings of guilt, anxiety, and stress as the mind struggles to reconcile the opposing thoughts. Cognitive dissonance can lead individuals to rationalize their behavior in order to reduce the tension. They may convince themselves that stealing was justified in their specific situation, diminishing the dissonance. This rationalization allows them to maintain a positive self-image despite acting against their beliefs.
