Empathy is the antidote to shame from "summary" of Daring Greatly by Brene Brown
When we experience shame, our instinct is often to hide or bury those feelings deep within ourselves. We may feel vulnerable, exposed, and unworthy of connection with others. However, the key to overcoming shame lies in the power of empathy. Empathy allows us to connect with others on a deeper level by understanding and sharing their feelings. When we are able to show empathy towards someone who is experiencing shame, we provide them with a sense of validation and support. We let them know that they are not alone in their struggles and that their feelings are valid. By offering empathy, we create a safe space for others to open up about their shame and explore it without fear of judgment. This act of vulnerability and connection is crucial in breaking the cycle of shame and fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance. Empathy also allows us to practice self-compassion and understanding towards ourselves. When we are able to show empathy towards our own feelings of shame, we can begin to heal and grow from our experiences. We can learn to be kinder to ourselves and treat ourselves with the same level of compassion that we would offer to others.- Empathy serves as a powerful tool in building meaningful connections and fostering a sense of community. It allows us to break down the barriers that shame creates and move towards a place of healing, growth, and self-acceptance. By embracing empathy, we can begin to live wholeheartedly and embrace our vulnerabilities as strengths rather than weaknesses.
